Teneguía is a special kind of cinder cone volcano. It's called "monogenetic," which means it has erupted only once. This big event happened in 1971. Even though it erupted just one time, there has been more earthquake activity around it since then.

Teneguía is found on La Palma, one of the beautiful Canary Islands. It sits at the southern end of a larger volcano system called Cumbre Vieja. Teneguía is just one of many openings, or "vents," on this bigger volcano.

The 1971 Volcano Eruption

This volcano vent was the site of a volcanic eruption on land in Spain. It started on October 26 and ended on November 28, 1971.

Before the eruption began, people felt many Earthquakes. During the eruption, a person sadly died from breathing in too much gas near the volcano. This happened after they went past safety barriers put in place to keep everyone safe.

The eruption caused some damage to roads, farms, and homes. It also destroyed a beach, but a new one later formed naturally. Luckily, areas where many people lived were not affected by the lava or ash.

Today, the Teneguía volcano is a popular spot for tourists. It is part of a special protected area called the Monumento Natural de Los Volcanes de Teneguía. Until 2011, this was the last time a volcano had erupted in Spain. It was also the last eruption on land in Spain until the 2021 Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption.
