Tenji (天治) was a special name for a period of time in Japanese history, like how we have years today. It's called a nengō in Japanese. This era came after a period called Hōan and before another called Daiji. The Tenji era lasted for about two years, from April 1124 to January 1126. During this time, the emperor of Japan was named Emperor Sutoku.

What Happened During the Tenji Era?

  • 1124 (Tenji 1, 2nd month): Two former emperors, Emperor Horikawa and Emperor Toba, went on a fun trip in their carriages to see the beautiful flowers outside the city.
  • 1124 (Tenji 1, 10th month): Former-Emperor Horikawa made a visit to Mount Koya, which is a very important and sacred mountain in Japan.
  • 1125 (Tenji 2, 10th month): Emperor Sutoku visited many important shrines. He first went to Iwashimizu Shrine and the Kamo Shrines. After that, he also visited other famous shrines like Hirano, Ōharano, Mutsunoo, Kitano, and Gion, along with several others.
