Emperor Horikawa (堀河天皇, Horikawa-tennō) was the 73rd emperor of Japan. He ruled from 1087 to 1107. His personal name was Taruhito-shinnō.
About Emperor Horikawa
Before he became emperor, his name was Taruhito-shinnō. He was also sometimes called Yoshihito-tennō.
Horikawa was the son of Emperor Shirakawa. His mother was Fujiwara no Kenshi. She was the adopted daughter of a powerful leader named Fujiwara Morozane.
His Family
Emperor Horikawa had several children. His main empress was Princess Tokushi.
He also had a consort named Fujiwara no Ishi. Their son, Imperial Prince Munehito, later became Emperor Toba.
Other children included:
- Imperial Princess Soshi

- Imperial Prince Priest Saiun, who became a head priest

His Time as Emperor
Horikawa became emperor on January 3, 1087. This happened after his father, Emperor Shirakawa, decided to step down.
Even though Horikawa was the emperor, his father, Emperor Shirakawa, still held a lot of power. This was known as "cloistered rule". It meant the retired emperor guided many decisions from behind the scenes.
Emperor Horikawa was very interested in learning, poetry, and music. He spent his reign focusing on these cultural activities.
When his consort, Fujiwara no Ishi, passed away in 1103, their son, Prince Munehito, was raised by his grandfather, the retired Emperor Shirakawa. This son later became Emperor Toba.
Emperor Horikawa died when he was 28 years old, on August 9, 1107. He is buried in a special memorial shrine in Kyoto.
