Tenmile Creek is a stream about 15 miles (24 km) long in Albany County, New York. It is a "tributary" of Catskill Creek. This means Tenmile Creek flows into Catskill Creek. Catskill Creek then flows into the Hudson River. So, Tenmile Creek is part of the larger Hudson River "watershed." A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a common river or lake.

Exploring Tenmile Creek

Tenmile Creek flows through the villages of Rensselaerville and Medusa. Both of these villages are located in the town of Rensselaerville.

Its Journey and Power

As the creek gets close to Medusa, it enters a very deep valley called a "ravine." In this short section, the creek drops about 200 feet (61 meters) over just 0.6 miles (1 km). This big drop created a lot of fast-moving water.

Early settlers used this strong flow for "hydraulic power." This means they used the power of the moving water to run machines. They built mills, like a grist mill to grind grain, right next to the creek. The mill house in Medusa was an important building for many years. It stood until the 1980s.

Other Streams that Join Tenmile Creek

A "tributary" is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one. Tenmile Creek has its own tributaries that join it along its path.
