During World War II, the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) built many airfields in Tennessee. These airfields were super important for training pilots and crews. They learned to fly and fight in USAAF planes, like fighter jets and bombers.
Most of these airfields were managed by the Third Air Force or the Army Air Forces Training Command (AAFTC). The AAFTC was a group that helped train soldiers for the air force. Other USAAF groups also used these airfields for support. These included the Air Technical Service Command, Air Transport Command, and Troop Carrier Command.
Even today, you can still find parts of these old wartime airfields. Many of them became regular public airports. Some were turned back into farms. A few even stayed as United States Air Force bases and were very important during the Cold War. Hundreds of the temporary buildings built back then are still around and used for different things.
