Teresa N. Washington was a top student at Fisk University, where she studied English. She graduated with high honors in 1993. She later earned a master's degree from the University of Mississippi. During this time, she also studied abroad at the University of Ghana-Legon in Africa. In 2000, she earned her PhD in literature from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria.

Dr. Washington has taught at several universities. These include Obafemi Awolowo University, Fisk University, and Grambling State University. At Grambling State, she was honored as the Ann Petry Endowed Professor in English in 2008.

Washington's first book, Our Mothers, Our Powers, Our Texts, came out in 2005. It explores the power of Àjẹ́ and the important figures in history and spirituality who used it.
