The Territory of Baja California Sur was a special area in Mexico that was run by the federal government. It existed from 1931 until 1974. Today, this same area is known as the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. It is located on the southern part of the Baja California peninsula.

How the Territory Was Formed
In December 1930, the Mexican government made an important change. The Mexican Congress, which is like the country's main law-making body, changed a rule in the Constitution. The Constitution is the most important set of laws for a country.
This change split the larger Baja California Territory into two smaller territories. These were the Territory of Baja California Norte and the Territory of Baja California Sur. The dividing line between them was set at the 28th parallel north, which is a line of latitude on a map.
Becoming a State
The people living in the Territory of Baja California Sur worked hard for many years to make it a full state of Mexico. They wanted their leaders to be from their own area. They also wanted the territory to have the same rights and powers as other states.
Achieving Statehood in 1974
Their goal was finally reached in 1974. On October 8, 1974, a special announcement was made. It was published in the Official Journal of the Federation, which is where all new Mexican laws are officially written down. This announcement said that the Territory of Baja California Sur was now the Free and Sovereign State of Baja California Sur.
The last leader of the territory, Félix Agramont Cota, became the first temporary governor of the new state.
Growing the Region
During this time, the Mexican government also worked to help the region grow. They wanted more people to move there and for the economy to get stronger. They encouraged people to settle in the area and helped with farming. They also made it easier to bring in goods from other countries by having special rules for taxes.
A lot of money was also spent on building new things like roads and public services. They also invested in schools, tourism, and other important ways for people to make a living. All these efforts helped the region become more connected and prosperous.
