Terry is a small town located in Hinds County, Mississippi, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,304 people lived there. This number was higher than the 1,063 people counted in 2010. Terry is found along Interstate 55, which is a major highway. It is about 15 miles southwest of Jackson, the capital city of Mississippi. Terry is part of the larger Jackson metropolitan area.

Terry's History: How the Town Began
The town of Terry was first called Dry Grove. It changed its name to Terry to honor W. D. Terry. The town was built on his land. You can find this information on a bronze plaque in the center of town.
Early Settlers and Railroads
People from Virginia first settled in this area in 1811. Later, in 1867, the town of Terry was officially created. This happened when a railroad was built through the area. Terry became a "depot," which means it was a place where trains stopped to pick up or drop off goods and passengers.

For many years, Terry was the home of Albert G. Brown. He was a governor of Mississippi.

Terry is in the southeastern part of Hinds County. The city of Byram is just north of Terry.

Interstate 55 runs through the western side of Terry. You can get on or off the highway at Exit 78. This highway goes north about 16 miles to Jackson. It also goes south about 9 miles to Crystal Springs.
The town of Terry covers about 3.8 square miles (9.9 square kilometers). A small part of this area, about 0.02 square miles (0.05 square kilometers), is water. Rhodes Creek and Vaughn Creek flow through the town to the east. These creeks are "tributaries," meaning they are smaller streams that flow into the larger Pearl River.

Media: News and Information in Terry
For many years, the town of Terry had its own weekly newspaper called The Terry Headlight. This newspaper was put together in Terry but printed in Crystal Springs.
Past and Present Newspapers
Editors of The Terry Headlight included Mamie Birdsong, Willie Dean Sojourner Brister, Carolyn Booth Patrick, and Elsie Moss Berryhill. The newspaper stopped being published around 1990.
After The Terry Headlight stopped, The Hinds County Gazette started including a special section about Terry. Later, this became a regular column about the Terry area.
In 2013, The Hinds County Gazette stopped publishing for a short time. At that point, The Terry Headlight was brought back as a free online newspaper. In 2014, The Hinds County Gazette started publishing again. It still includes the weekly column about Terry.
Another newspaper, The Terry News, used to be published monthly. It provided information about local events and was mailed to every home in the 39170 zip code. The Terry News stopped publishing in early 2015.
