Terry Shumpert, whose full name is Terrance Darnell Shumpert, was born on August 16, 1966. He is an American former professional baseball player. He played many different positions, which is why he was called a "utility player." Before playing professionally, he played college baseball for the University of Kentucky.

Playing College Baseball

Terry was a key player for the Kentucky Wildcats baseball team for three years. He played in the middle of the infield, often at second base. In 1987, he was recognized as an All-American player for his skills at second base.

He was also named to the first-team All-SEC (Southeastern Conference) in both 1986 and 1987. In 1987, he was part of the SEC All-Tournament Team too.

Great Seasons at Kentucky

In 1986, as a sophomore, Terry had a great season. He hit the ball well, with a batting average of .364. He also hit 19 doubles, two triples, and 10 home runs. He brought in 37 runs for his team and stole 28 bases.

His junior year in 1987 was even more impressive. He hit .376, had 19 doubles, four triples, and nine home runs. He also stole 32 bases that season. His .374 batting average in 1987 is still one of the best in the University of Kentucky's history. He also ranks high in the school's record book for stolen bases in a single season.

Playing Professional Baseball

Terry Shumpert was chosen by the Kansas City Royals in the second round of the 1987 Major League Baseball Draft. He made his first appearance in a Major League Baseball game with the Royals on May 1, 1990.

He continued to play in the Major Leagues until the 2003 season. During his professional career, Terry played in 854 games. He had a batting average of .252, hit 49 home runs, and brought in 223 runs. He also stole 85 bases throughout his career.
