What Does the Rainforest Elf Look Like?
The rainforest elf is a very small dragonfly. It's usually black and yellow. It measures about 25 to 30 millimeters (about 1 inch) long. Its wings can spread out to about 40 to 50 millimeters (about 2 inches).
Its wings are mostly clear, but they have a soft, pale yellow color. The body, called the abdomen, is black with three or four bright yellow spots. The part of its body where its wings and legs are attached, called the thorax, looks shiny and metallic.
Where Do Rainforest Elves Live?
The group of dragonflies that the rainforest elf belongs to, called Tetrathemis, lives in many places. You can find them in Africa, Madagascar, Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and Australia.
However, the rainforest elf subspecies, Tetrathemis irregularis cladophila, is only found in a specific part of Australia. It lives along the coast and nearby inland areas of Queensland. This area stretches from the Cape York Peninsula down to a town called Cardwell.
Even though it's a unique Australian dragonfly, experts haven't yet checked its status for the IUCN Red List. This list helps us know if animals are in danger. But you can find the rainforest elf listed in the Catalogue of Life, which is a big online list of all known living things.
Rainforest Elf Homes: Their Habitat
The rainforest elf loves to live near streams that flow through rainforests. These wet, green places provide the perfect home for these small, colorful dragonflies.
