Tetsuharu Yamaguchi (山口 哲治, Yamaguchi Tetsuharu, born September 8, 1977) is a former Japanese football player. He played as a goalkeeper.

Playing career

Tetsuharu Yamaguchi was born in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, on September 8, 1977. After finishing high school, he joined a professional football club called Sanfrecce Hiroshima in 1996. This club played in the J1 League, which is Japan's top football league.

However, it was tough for him to get playing time. He was behind two other experienced goalkeepers, Kazuya Maekawa and Takashi Shimoda. Because of this, he didn't play in any official matches for Sanfrecce Hiroshima until 1998.

In 1999, Tetsuharu Yamaguchi moved to a new club, Sagan Tosu. This team had just been promoted to the J2 League, which is the second-highest league in Japan. At Sagan Tosu, he still faced strong competition. Another goalkeeper, Riki Takasaki, was often chosen to play instead of him from the year 2000.

Things changed for Yamaguchi in 2001. Takasaki left the club, and this gave Tetsuharu Yamaguchi a chance to become the main goalkeeper. He played in many matches that season. But in 2002, he lost his regular spot to another player, Junnosuke Schneider. At the end of the 2002 season, Tetsuharu Yamaguchi decided to retire from playing professional football.
