About Thacher Hurd
Thacher Hurd was born in Burlington, Vermont. His parents, Clement Hurd and Edith Thacher Hurd, were also famous children's book creators. Thacher grew up in a very creative home on a farm in Vermont. He said it had a "wonderful aura of creativity."
A famous author, Margaret Wise Brown, dedicated her 1949 book My World to Thacher. This dedication was changed right before the book was printed. It was changed to say "to John Thacher Hurd when he comes (he's here)."
After studying at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Thacher started making picture books. His very first book was The Old Chair, which came out in 1978.
In 2001, Thacher Hurd helped re-release My World. He re-colored the pictures for this new edition. The book was originally by Margaret Wise Brown and his father, Clement Hurd. In 2008, he used his father's artwork from Goodnight Moon to create Goodnight Moon 123: A Counting Book.
In 2004, an art show featured the work of Thacher, his father, and his mother. The exhibition was called "From Goodnight Moon to Art Dog: The World of Clement, Edith and Thatcher Hurd." It was held at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center.
Thacher Hurd's book Zoom City was very special. It was named a New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year. In 2012, this book even inspired the name of the American technology company Zoom Video Communications.
In 1992, Thacher wrote a book with John Cassidy called Watercolor for the Artistically Undiscovered. It teaches people how to paint with watercolors. This book was reissued in 2017.
Thacher Hurd and his wife, Olivia, live in Berkeley, California. They have two sons named Manton and Nicholas. In 1983, Thacher and Olivia started their own publishing company. It is called Peaceable Kingdom Press. This company prints cards and posters based on children’s books.
