Thattai is a much-loved snack across the southern parts of India and even in Sri Lanka. While it's a special treat for holidays like Krishna Jayanthi and Deepavali, you can enjoy it all year round! Many people think Thattai is the perfect snack to have with tea, especially during rainy seasons.

You can find Thattai in special sweet shops and bakeries. But lots of families also love making this tasty snack at home. Even though making Thattai can take some time, it's usually quite easy compared to other traditional Indian snacks.

This snack is shaped like a flat, round disc, usually about 2 inches wide. It's fried until it turns a beautiful golden-brown color. Because it's so flat, some people also call it Thattu (which means "plate") Vadai. The exact taste and texture of Thattai can change a bit depending on where it's made in South India. For example, in the Sri Lankan Tamil community, it's known as Paruthithurai Vadai. This name comes from a village called Paruthithurai (also known as Point Pedro) in northern Sri Lanka, where this version of the snack first became popular.

What Makes Thattai So Tasty?

The main ingredients for Thattai are rice flour and urad daal. Other yummy additions often include peanuts, fried gram, and chana daal. These ingredients are mixed together with different seasonings. Then, small portions are shaped and carefully deep-fried in oil until they are perfectly crispy. You can find Thattai in many exciting flavors, such as butter, ginger, and even masala!
