The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future (or simply The Adventures of Ook and Gluk) is an exciting graphic novel by Dav Pilkey. You might know Dav Pilkey from his popular Captain Underpants series. This book is a spin-off from that series. In fact, the story is "credited" to George Beard and Harold Hutchins, who are characters from Captain Underpants! They are listed as the author and illustrator.

This book takes readers on a wild adventure with two cave-kids. It combines ancient times with futuristic fun.

In March 2021, the author and publisher decided to stop selling this book. This decision was made because some people felt certain characters were shown in a way that wasn't fair or kind.

An Epic Adventure: Ook and Gluk's Story

Life in Cave-land Ohio

Our story begins way back in 500,001 BC, in a place called Cave-land Ohio. Here, we meet Ook and Gluk, two brave cave-kids. The grumpy leader, Big Chief Goppernopper, tries to force Ook's older sister, Gak, to marry him. He wants to stop Ook and Gluk from bothering him.

Ook and Gluk rescue Gak from a sandpit. They also become friends with a dinosaur named Mog-Mog and her baby. Together, they stop the wedding!

A Trip to the Future

Big Chief Goppernopper is very angry. He meets his descendant, J.P. Goppernopper, who is a CEO from the year 2222 A.D. J.P. Goppernopper uses a time portal to steal natural resources from the past. This is because resources will be used up in his future time.

The Chief goes back to the past. He forces all the cave-people to work for Goppernopper Enterprises. Ook, Gluk, and baby Mog-Mog are taken to the year 2222. They are meant to be treated badly, but the baby dinosaur helps them escape. They hide in Master Wong's School of Kung-Fu.

Becoming Kung-Fu Masters

Ook and Gluk train with Master Wong for seven years. They learn amazing kung-fu skills. Master Wong always asks them, "Who is the greatest man?" They struggle to find the right answer.

When it's time to save their people, they finally realize the answer: "Nobody." Master Wong then gives them their black belts. They, along with their dinosaur friend Lily (the baby Mog-Mog, now grown up), travel back to 500,008 BC. Their mission is to free the enslaved cave-people.

Saving Their World

Goppernopper returns with his giant robot dinosaurs, called Mecha-saurs. Ook and Gluk use their cleverness and kung-fu to defeat them. They spray-paint the Goppernopper building and destroy an explosive tank.

The Goppernoppers capture Master Wong and his daughter, Lan. They threaten to execute them if Ook and Gluk don't surrender. Ook and Gluk go back to 2229 to save their friends.

At the last moment, Master Wong reminds them of their training. When J.P. Goppernopper prepares to attack, Ook and Gluk ask, "Who is the greatest man?" J.P. and Chief Goppernopper both shout that they are the greatest. Their argument causes J.P. to accidentally shoot and erase the Chief, himself, and all their bad deeds from history!

Ook, Gluk, and Lily quickly escape back to their own time. Ook goes back for Lan, who agrees to be his cave wife. They return to a peaceful Cave-land. Lily reunites with her mother, Mog-Mog. Everyone lives happily ever after in their prehistoric world.

About the Book's Availability

On March 25, 2021, Dav Pilkey and his publisher, Scholastic, announced a decision. They decided to stop printing and selling "The Adventures of Ook and Gluk." This happened because some people expressed concerns. They felt that certain characters in the book were shown in a way that was not fair or kind.

Dav Pilkey shared that all the money he and his wife earned from the book would be donated. These donations went to charities that help children. These charities provide free books, art supplies, and theater experiences. They also support organizations that promote diversity in children's books. Other donations went to groups working to stop unfair treatment of people.

This decision sparked discussions among readers and critics. Some people supported the removal, while others felt the book was harmless. Physical copies of the book became very rare after this decision.
