The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future is a fun graphic novel by Dav Pilkey. It's a spin-off from his popular Captain Underpants series. The book is written as if it was created by the Captain Underpants characters themselves: "George Beard" is the author and "Harold Hutchins" is the illustrator.
The story follows George and Harold, who decide to make their own comic book about science. They believe scientists don't know everything!
In 2021, the author and publisher announced that the book was being taken off the market. This was because it had some parts that might have shown people in a way that wasn't fair or kind.

The Story of Ook and Gluk
A Funny Science Debate
The book starts with a funny message from Professor Gaylord M. Sneedly. He says the book has "many scientific errors." He points out that dinosaurs and cavemen lived millions of years apart. He even mentions winning an award for being "The Most Brilliantest Science Guy."
But George and Harold disagree! They add their own "scientific disclaimer disclaimer." They say that science is always changing as new things are discovered. They even claim to have a time machine! They say they've traveled through time and found proof that dinosaurs and cavemen did live together. They joke that scientists won't figure this out until the year 2073. So, they present their book as "the world's first book based on science facts."
The Main Adventure Begins
The real story takes us to Cave-land Ohio, way back in 500,001 BC. The leader, Big Chief Goppernopper, tries to force Ook's older sister, Gak, to marry him. He wants Ook and Gluk to stop bothering him. Ook and Gluk save Gak from a sandpit. They also become friends with a dinosaur named Mog-Mog and her baby. They stop the wedding!
Chief Goppernopper gets angry and meets his future relative, J.P. Goppernopper, from the year 2222 A.D. J.P. is a powerful CEO. The Goppernoppers use a time portal to steal natural resources from the past. This is because all resources will be used up in their future time. The Chief goes back to the past and makes all the cave-people work for Goppernopper Enterprises.
Ook, Gluk, and baby Mog-Mog are forced to shovel. Then, the Goppernoppers take them to the year 2222 to torture them. But the baby dinosaur helps them escape! The three friends hide in Master Wong's School of Kung-Fu.
Becoming Kung-Fu Cavemen
Ook and Gluk train with Master Wong for seven years. They learn amazing kung-fu skills. Master Wong keeps asking them, "Who is the greatest man?" They can't figure out the right answer.
When it's time to save their people, they finally realize the answer: "Nobody!" Master Wong is proud and gives them black belts. Ook, Gluk, and their dinosaur friend Lily (who is baby Mog-Mog, now grown up) travel back to Cave-land in 500,008 BC. They free the enslaved cave-people.
Chief Goppernopper returns with his giant robot dinosaurs called Mecha-saurs. Ook and Gluk spray-paint the Goppernopper Enterprises building. They also destroy the Mecha-saurs with an explosive tank.
Goppernopper sends a letter, threatening to execute Master Wong and his daughter Lan if Ook and Gluk don't surrender. The heroes go back to 2229. They pretend to surrender, but the Goppernoppers plan to execute them all anyway.
Master Wong reminds them of their training. When J.P. Goppernopper gets ready to fire his ray, Ook and Gluk ask, "Who is the greatest man?" J.P. and the Chief both shout that they are the greatest. Their argument makes J.P. accidentally shoot and kill the Chief! This causes J.P. and all his bad actions to disappear from history.
Ook, Gluk, and Lily run back to the disappearing time portal. Ook quickly goes back for Lan, who agrees to be his cave-wife. They warp back together. The year 2229 becomes a much brighter and peaceful future. Lily finally reunites with her mother, Mog-Mog. Ook, Gluk, Lan, and the dinosaurs live happily in Cave-land.
Caveman Speak
The last part of the book teaches you how to speak "caveman language." It gives many examples to help you translate regular English into caveman talk. The book also has a "How-2-Draw" section. It shows you how to draw characters like Gluk in 32 easy steps!

Why the Book Was Removed
On March 25, 2021, Dav Pilkey announced that he and Scholastic (the publisher) decided to stop printing the book. This was because some parts of the book had stereotypes that were not fair or kind to Asian people.
Dav Pilkey explained that all the money he and his wife earned from the book would be given to good causes. These charities help children get free books, art supplies, and theater experiences. They also support groups that promote diversity in children's books and work to stop hatred against Asian people.
