What Happens in the Movie?
Ryan's Trip to China
Ryan Tyler's dad, Michael, works with pandas in China. He sends Ryan a plane ticket to visit him. Ryan isn't sure he wants to go. But his mom tells him he can always come home if he doesn't like it.
A Panda in Trouble
In China, Michael and his team are tracking a mother panda. His team includes Ling, a young translator, and Chu, Ling's grandfather. Chu knows a lot about pandas. They put a special radio collar on the panda. After they leave, the panda steps into a trap.
Back at the panda reserve, Michael sees a danger signal from the panda's collar. Just as Michael, Ling, and Chu are about to leave, Ryan arrives. After some talking, Michael lets Ryan join them.
The Poachers and the Cub
Two bad guys, Shong and Po, are poachers. They set the trap. They accidentally shoot Michael in the ankle. Then they run away with the mother panda's baby cub. Michael and the mother panda are taken back to the reserve by helicopter. Ling, Chu, and Ryan go to find the poachers.
They find the poachers' secret hideout. They free the baby panda cub. Chu then tells Ryan and Ling to go on without him. He needs to return to the reserve.
Escaping Danger
The poachers shoot the bridge that Ryan and Ling are crossing. The two kids and the panda cub fall into the river. They are washed downstream but manage to get out of the water.
Later, they are washed downstream again. When they get out, they find themselves covered in leeches. They have to clean themselves in the lake. Ryan then has a clever idea. He uses the batteries from his watch. He connects them to the panda's radio collar. This helps his dad find their location.
The Journey Home
Ryan and Ling try to get the cub back to the reserve. They find a local village. The villagers are kind and help them because they are protecting the cub. But Shong and Po, the poachers, also arrive in the village. The villagers help Ryan, Ling, and the cub escape. However, the poachers follow them.
Finally, Michael arrives and stops the poachers. He, Ryan, Ling, and the cub drive back to the reserve. Chinese officials were planning to close the panda reserve. But they see Ryan bringing the cub back to its mother. The cub and mother reunite. Because of this, the officials decide to keep the reserve open.
