Barbie's High School Adventures
In "The Barbie Diaries," Barbie is a normal high school student. She is in her second year, called sophomore year. Barbie faces many things that real teens do. These include making new friends and dealing with school gossip. She also tries to get involved in school activities.
Trying Out for the School TV Station
Barbie wants to be the main reporter for the school TV station. But Raquelle, a girl who used to be her best friend, gets the job instead. Raquelle is a bit snobby. So, Barbie ends up being Raquelle's helper. She has to get drinks and do Raquelle's work.
A Mysterious Bracelet and a Diary
Raquelle breaks up with Todd, and soon Todd and Barbie start spending time together. They become a couple, and Todd asks Barbie to the Fall Formal dance. Barbie and her best friends, Tia and Courtney, go shopping for a dress. While they are out, they find out that Raquelle and Todd are back together.
At the store, a mysterious woman named Stephanie helps them. She gives them some charm bracelets for free. Barbie's bracelet comes with a diary. Barbie starts writing her hopes and dreams in this diary.
When Wishes Come True
Soon after, the things Barbie writes in her diary start to happen! Someone leaves her secret love notes. Her band, Charmz, even gets a chance to play at the school dance. Barbie was already invited to this dance.
Next, Barbie decides to make a TV story about popular kids. She wants to find out "What Makes Them Popular." But she starts to forget her friends. Her story also becomes a bit unkind. She even misses Tia's election for class president. Instead, she hangs out with Reagan and Dawn, who are Raquelle's friends. Barbie spends hours talking to them and skipping band practice.
The Truth About the Bracelet
Barbie realizes that her diary wishes are coming true. She rushes back to the mall to ask Stephanie about it. To her surprise, the store says Stephanie never worked there. It seems like she doesn't even exist!
Tia and Courtney find out that Kevin, not Todd, has been leaving Barbie the love notes. They try to get Kevin to tell Barbie, but he won't. Dawn and Reagan discover that Barbie only became friends with them for her TV story. They stop hanging out with her and tell Raquelle. Raquelle then steals Barbie's magic bracelet.
Tia and Courtney watch Barbie's TV story footage. They find out Barbie shared a secret about Tia. They confront Barbie and tell her they don't want to be friends anymore.
Making Things Right
On the night of the TV story, Barbie says sorry to her friends. Instead of her story, she shows Kevin's funny video clips. Barbie feels too ashamed to go to the dance. But her friends arrive and tell her she has to perform with them. They give her the dress they had saved for her at the mall.
Barbie is still worried because she doesn't have her bracelet. Kevin takes one of his guitar strings and puts it around her wrist. Barbie calls it a "stupid piece of bent metal." Then she realizes that's what her bracelet was, too! The girls play a great concert. Courtney finally does a drumstick trick she couldn't do before.
Finding True Love
While dancing with Todd, Barbie asks him about the notes in her locker. Todd says he doesn't know anything about them. Barbie gets confused and thinks about who else could have been where the notes said. She realizes it was Kevin all along! Barbie leaves the dance and goes to Kevin. Kevin gives her back the charm bracelet he found. She apologizes for not realizing sooner. She also points out that the strange rhymes in the notes were a clue. Barbie and Kevin dance together and become a couple. At the end of the movie, Barbie and Kevin watch a movie and eat ziti, just as Kevin had asked.

Promoting the Movie
To help promote The Barbie Diaries, a girl band was created. This band was called Charmz. It was put together by Mattel and Shock Records in Australia. The idea was to connect with Barbie being in a band in the movie.
How Charmz Was Formed
The members of Charmz were chosen through a singing contest. Girls aged 8 to 14 could send in a video of themselves singing. About 500 girls entered the contest. The four winners were Gianna Dalla-Vecchia, Paris Maggs, Lauren Stowe (all 13), and Shannon Cordes (14).
The Charmz members went to a recording studio in Sydney. There, they got advice from Ricki-Lee Coulter, who was a contestant on Australian Idol.
Charmz Album and Single
Charmz released their own album on October 28, 2006. It included cover versions of songs by other artists. These artists included Ricki-Lee Coulter, Robbie Williams, Bananarama, and Gwen Stefani.
The band's single was "This Is Me." It was a cover of the song sung by Skye Sweetnam in the movie. Charmz's version of "This Is Me" came out on July 31, 2006. It reached number 57 on the ARIA singles chart in Australia.
