The Chicago World was a weekly newspaper published in Chicago, Illinois. It came out every Saturday from 1918 to 1953. This newspaper was an important voice for the African American community in Chicago during its time.

History of The Chicago World

The newspaper was started by Jacob R. Tipper in 1918. He was from Bainbridge, Georgia. His wife, Mrs. Stella M. Tipper, also helped a lot with the newspaper. She was very important in managing it. In 1949, an issue of the paper said she had "mothered the paper through many trying experiences." The Tippers moved to Chicago from Georgia around 1908. They opened a grocery store and market soon after they arrived.

Jacob Tipper's Role in Politics

Jacob Tipper was active in politics in Chicago. He was a member of the Republican Party. He often ran for public office, but he never won. Even so, he was well-known among politicians in the Bronzeville area. He was chosen as a delegate to the Republican National Convention. This means he represented his area at a big meeting for the Republican Party. He was also a supporter of Edward Herbert Wright in Chicago's Second Ward.

From Enterprise to World

The newspaper first started in 1918. It was called the Chicago Enterprise then. In 1928, its name was changed to The Chicago World. The newspaper had clear ideas about what it stood for. It encouraged its readers to:

  • Use their money wisely in their own community.
  • Support local businesses.
  • Think about how their spending could help their community.
  • Work to make sure all communities had fair representation.

Growth and Operations

The Chicago World slowly became very popular. At its peak, about 40,000 copies were sold each week. The newspaper had a staff of ten people. They ran a printing plant with valuable equipment. This plant was located near another famous newspaper, The Chicago Defender. A journalist named Frank Marshall Davis once said that sometimes new articles were not printed. If Jacob Tipper had not paid his staff, he would just print a new front page himself.

Newspaper Content

The Chicago World supported the Republican Party in its political news. It often endorsed Republican candidates. For example, it supported Governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York for president in 1948. The front page of the newspaper covered many topics. These included local news, national news, and international events. It also reported on crime, help for people in need, business, and sports. The paper also had fun sections. These included cartoons, book reviews, church news, a theater page, and a society page.
