The Courier's Journey Through Time
How The Courier Started
The Courier began a very long time ago in 1801. It was first called the Dundee Courier & Argus. Back then, the whole front page of the newspaper was filled with "classified advertisements." These were small ads for things like jobs, items for sale, or services. This was a common way for newspapers to look in the past.
In 1809, a person named Robert Rintoul took over the newspaper. He used The Courier to talk about important political changes. He also shared his thoughts about local politicians, like Alexander Riddoch.
Big Changes Over The Years
A major change happened in 1926 during a time called the General Strike. During this strike, The Courier joined with another newspaper called The Advertiser. For a few weeks in May 1926, the newspaper looked more like The Advertiser. It focused on big headlines. After the strike, it went back to its older style.
Another big change came on January 21, 2012. The newspaper changed its size from a "broadsheet" to a "compact format." A broadsheet is a very large newspaper, like the ones you might see in old movies. A compact format is smaller, like a "tabloid." The editor, Richard Neville, said this change was the "dawn of a new era." He meant it was a fresh start. He also said the company was adding new sections and more content.
Just over a year later, in 2013, a digital version of the newspaper was launched. This meant people could read it online. In 2016, The Courier celebrated its 200th birthday! In that same year, it was named the UK Regional Newspaper of the Year. This was a big award for the newspaper.
In 2022, The Courier won another award. It was named Scotland's news website of the year at the Scottish Press Awards.
