The Courier's Journey Through Time
How The Courier Newspaper Started
The Courier began in 1801. It was first called the Dundee Courier & Argus. In its early days, the entire front page was filled with small ads. This was a common way for newspapers to look back then.
In 1809, Robert Rintoul took over the newspaper. He used The Courier to push for changes in politics. He also criticized local leaders like Alexander Riddoch.
Big Changes for The Courier
In 1926, during a big workers' strike across the UK, The Courier joined with another newspaper called The Advertiser. From May 10 to May 28, 1926, the newspaper started putting big headlines on its front page. This was like The Advertiser. After the strike, it went back to its old style until 1992.
Another major change happened on January 21, 2012. The newspaper changed its size to a smaller, more compact format. Before this, it was a large broadsheet newspaper. The editor, Richard Neville, said this was a "new era" for the paper. He also said the company was adding new sections and more content.
Just over a year later, a digital version of the newspaper was launched. This meant people could read it online. In 2016, which was its 200th birthday, The Courier won an award. It was named the UK Regional Newspaper of the Year.
In 2022, The Courier was recognized again. It was named Scotland's news website of the year at the Scottish Press Awards.
