The Elysian is a large building in Cork, Ireland. It has both offices and homes inside, making it a mixed-use building. It was finished in 2008, during a time of fast economic growth in Ireland often called the "Celtic Tiger" period. When it was first built, The Elysian was the tallest building in the Republic of Ireland. Later, in 2018, another building called Capital Dock in Dublin became taller. Today, The Elysian is the third tallest building in the Republic of Ireland and the tallest in Cork city.
About The Elysian
The Elysian is made up of several connected buildings. These buildings are 6 to 8 stories high. There is also a tall 17-story tower at one corner. The very top of the tower's roof is about 69.7 meters (229 feet) high. This makes it one of the tallest buildings in the Republic of Ireland. The complex also has a special Japanese garden and a two-level underground parking area.
How The Elysian Developed
The Elysian opened when Ireland was going through a difficult economic time. Because of this, many parts of the building stayed empty for a while. By April 2009, most of the 211 apartments were still unsold. Also, half of the business spaces were empty. This led some people to call it "The Idle Tower." This was a playful name, like a nearby pub called "The Idle Hour."
An article in The Irish Times newspaper said the building felt very empty during these tough times. Owning an apartment in The Elysian also came with yearly management fees of €4,000.
In 2010, the company that built The Elysian had many financial challenges. A special government agency helped manage these challenges. Later, in 2014, another company called Carbon Finance bought the building's financial arrangements.
Good news came in December 2014 when an Aldi supermarket opened on the ground floor. This brought more activity to the building. After some discussions about money, Carbon Finance officially kept ownership of The Elysian in 2015.
Things continued to improve. By May 2017, most of the apartments were rented out. Workers were busy getting the last few apartments ready. By the end of 2017, all the apartments in The Elysian were fully rented! In April 2018, Carbon Finance sold the entire complex to a company called Kennedy Wilson for about €87.5 million.
