The Story of David and Humpty Bumpty
This book tells the fun adventure of a boy named David Perry. David is from Pennsylvania. One day, he visits a circus and makes a wish: he wishes a camel could talk! To his surprise, the camel actually starts talking. David is amazed!
David soon learns he has a secret. He has a magic wishing button! This button makes all sorts of amazing things happen in the story. David gives the talking camel a funny nickname: Humpty Bumpty.
An Amazing Journey Begins
David and Humpty Bumpty start an incredible journey together. They travel to many strange and wonderful places. Some of these places include a land called Somewhere and another called Dwindlebury.
They also visit a magical flying island called Kapurta. This flying island is the "Enchanted Island" from the book's title!
Meeting New Friends
On their adventure, David and Humpty Bumpty meet many unique characters. These characters are just like the ones you'd expect to find in an Oz story. They meet Water Lily, who is a special lake nymph. They also meet Queen Else, who rules the land of Somewhere. And they even meet a friendly dragon named Dismocolese!
Reaching the Emerald City
Eventually, David and Humpty Bumpty make their way to the famous Emerald City. They arrive just in time for a big birthday party! The party is for the brave and kind Cowardly Lion.
Connections to Other Stories
The Enchanted Island of Oz has some things in common with Thompson's earlier Oz book, Yankee in Oz. It also reminds readers of other fantasy stories. For example, it has a flying island, which is similar to the flying island of Laputa in Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift.
Book Details
The first edition of The Enchanted Island of Oz included special maps. These maps showed the fantasy lands David and Humpty Bumpty visited. The maps were drawn by Dick Martin and James Haff. The book also had a special message at the end from Dorothy C. Maryott.
