What the Story is About
This story is told by a friend of Roderick Usher. The friend's name is not mentioned. Roderick believes he is very sick and might be dying. His old family house also seems to be falling apart.
Roderick has a sister named Madeleine. She becomes very ill and seems to fall into a deep sleep. She looks as if she has died.
Roderick knows that Madeleine is not truly dead. He places her in the family tomb. One stormy night, Madeleine rises from the tomb. She finds her brother, Roderick. She is truly dead this time. Roderick dies from fear. The old house then crumbles and falls into a nearby lake. The narrator quickly leaves and sees the water cover the spot where the house once stood.
