The Girl and the Fox: A Special Friendship
An Autumn Discovery
The story begins in the beautiful Jura Mountains of eastern France. A young girl, about 10 years old, lives on a farm. One autumn day, while riding her bike to school through the forest, she sees something amazing: a wild fox hunting! The fox quickly runs away, but the girl is captivated. She really wants to see the animal again.
Winter Challenges
For months, the girl spends her free time in the forest, hoping to find the fox. She doesn't see it again until winter arrives. One snowy day, she follows the fox's tracks far across the fields. Suddenly, she notices much larger tracks nearby. These are wolf tracks! A pack of wolves begins howling, making her very scared. She runs away in a panic, falls, and hurts her ankle.
Her ankle heals slowly, so she has to stay home all winter. During this time, she reads books about foxes and other forest animals. She learns a lot about their lives.
A Springtime Bond
When spring comes, the girl is eager to find the fox again. She looks for foxholes and eventually spots the fox, which she names Lily. Lily has young babies and moves her family to different dens because the girl is so curious. The girl then decides to watch Lily from a distance, giving the fox more space.
The girl finds Lily again and slowly tries to get the fox used to her presence. She offers it meat, and over time, she can even touch Lily. The fox eventually leads the girl to its new den.
A Lesson Learned
Finally, Lily the fox comes to the girl's house. The girl lets the fox inside, wanting to show it her bedroom. But the wild fox becomes scared and confused, unable to find a way out. In its panic, it accidentally breaks through a window to escape. Lily is hurt but survives. The girl learns an important lesson: wild animals need their freedom and cannot be kept as pets in a house.
Years later, the girl, now grown up, tells this whole story to her son. This shows how much the experience meant to her.
Making the Film
Filming Locations
The movie was filmed in the Plateau de Retord in Ain, France. The director, Luc Jacquet, knew this area well because he spent his childhood summers there. Some scenes were also filmed in Abruzzo, Italy.
The Animal Stars
Six different foxes played the role of Lily in the film. Their names were Titus, Sally, Ziza, Scott, Tango, and Pitchou. Titus was a special fox that had been tamed by an animal trainer named Marie-Noëlle Baroni. Titus lived to be 12 years old, which is quite old for a fox, and passed away on March 17, 2008.
