The Frog Prince, Continued is a funny picture book by Jon Scieszka. It has cool drawings by Steve Johnson. This book came out in 1991. It's a parody, which means it makes fun of a classic story. It continues the tale of The Frog Prince, where a princess kisses a frog and he turns into a prince.
But this story asks: what happens after "happily ever after"? It turns out, things are not so perfect for the prince and princess.
The Story Begins
The princess wants her prince to be more heroic. She wishes he would go on adventures. But the prince just lies around the castle. He still acts a bit like a frog, even though he is human. He likes catching flies!
The prince gets tired of the princess nagging him. He starts to think he was happier as a frog. He misses his old life on a lily pad. One day, he gets so annoyed that he runs away from the castle.
Prince's Adventures
As the prince wanders through the forest, he meets three different witches. He asks each one if they can turn him back into a frog. He hopes to find his "happily ever after" that way.
The first witch he meets seems confused. She thinks he is looking for Sleeping Beauty. The second witch tries to give him a poisoned apple. The prince wisely refuses it. The third witch lives in a gingerbread house. She seems to know Hansel and Gretel and invites the prince inside for dinner. The prince quickly realizes these witches are not helpful. He runs away from them all.
Lost in the Forest
After escaping the witches, the prince finds himself lost. It is getting dark in the forest. He starts to feel very lonely and worried. He realizes how good he had it with the princess. He misses her and their castle.
Just when he feels like he will never get home, he sees a fairy godmother. She is busy on her way to help Cinderella get ready for a ball. But she agrees to help the prince. Her magic is a bit strange, though. She turns him into a carriage!
A Magical Midnight
The prince sits in the forest as a carriage. He feels stuck and sad. He thinks he will never be a prince again. Luckily, the fairy godmother's magic wears off at midnight. Just like in other fairy tales, the spell breaks. The prince turns back into himself.
He quickly runs all the way home to his princess. She is so happy to see him! She tells him how much she loves him. She was very worried about him.
The prince kisses the princess. Their problems are finally solved. But not in the way you might expect! They both turn into frogs. This is their new, different "happily ever after."
