How the Gardens Began and Grew

The idea for a community garden in Fort Collins started a long time ago, around 1986. The city began a horticulture program in 1995. This program helps people learn about growing plants.

Opening and First Steps

Work on the visitor center began in 2004. The Gardens officially opened later that same year. It quickly became a popular spot for people to enjoy nature.

Big Expansion and New Gardens

In 2017, the Gardens started a huge expansion project. They added 5 new acres of garden spaces. This big project lasted for two years.

Many new gardens were created during this time. These included the Great Lawn, the Undaunted Garden, and the Prairie Garden. They also added the Foothills Garden and several Theme Gardens.

New Butterfly House

The expansion finished in 2019. It also doubled the size of the visitor center. A beautiful all-glass butterfly house was also added. Here, you can see many different kinds of butterflies. This house is run with the help of the Butterfly Pavilion from Westminster, Colorado.
