The Story of The Georgia Fruitcake Company

The Georgia Fruitcake Company was started by a man named Ira S. Womble, Sr. He was from Claxton, Georgia.

Ira Womble learned how to bake by working as an apprentice. This means he learned from an expert baker named Savino Gillio-Tos. Savino Gillio-Tos was the person who started The Claxton Bakery. Ira Womble worked alongside another baker, Albert Parker. Albert Parker later took The Claxton Bakery's fruitcakes all over the world!

After learning a lot about baking, Ira Womble moved to Clearwater, Florida. This was during a tough time called the Great Depression. He ran a special bakery there. While in Florida, he met Henry Ford, who was famous for making cars. Henry Ford helped Womble set up a bakery in Richmond Hill, Georgia. There, Womble worked on making products using soybeans.

In 1948, Ira Womble returned to his hometown of Claxton. That's when he opened his very own business, The Georgia Fruitcake Company.

How Much Fruitcake Do They Make?

The Georgia Fruitcake Company makes a lot of fruitcakes every year! They produce over 5 million pounds of fruitcake annually. That's like making enough fruitcakes to fill many, many trucks!
