The Great Rupert is a fun comedy and family movie from 1950. It was made by George Pal and directed by Irving Pichel. The main actors are Jimmy Durante, Tom Drake, and Terry Moore.
The movie is based on a story by Ted Allan, which was also a children's book called "Willie the Squowse". It's about a clever little animated squirrel named Rupert. He accidentally helps two families who are having money troubles.
The Story of Rupert
The movie tells the story of Rosalinda Amendola, whose family used to be acrobats. They are happy but don't have much money. Rosalinda is in love with Pete Dingle, who lives next door. Pete wants to be a composer. His parents are rich, but his dad, Frank, is very miserly. He hides all his money inside the wall of their house.
Things change when Joe Mahoney, a vaudeville performer, has a hard time. He has to leave his best friend, Rupert the dancing squirrel, in the town where Frank and Rosalinda live. Rupert has to live in a tree with other squirrels.
Rupert doesn't like living in a tree. He finds a way into the Dingle home. Without Frank knowing, Rupert makes a bed for himself right inside Frank's hidden money spot. To make more room, Rupert starts throwing Frank's money through a hole. The money floats down into the Amendola family's house. The Amendolas think the money is a gift from Heaven, answering Mrs. Amendola's prayers!
Louie Amendola starts paying off his debts and helping other businesses in town. This makes the FBI, the IRS, and the local police curious. They all come to the Amendola house to find out where the family's new wealth came from.
