Building The Greene Town Center
The Greene was built in two main parts. It covers a large area, about 72 acres, which is like 54 football fields! The total cost to build it was over $200 million. Most of the money came from the developer.
Phase One: Opening Day Fun
The first part of The Greene was finished in 2006. This phase brought many popular stores and restaurants to the area. Some of these included Lane Bryant, White House Black Market, Cheesecake Factory, Chico's, and Sephora. Many of these stores were new to the Dayton area.
Phase One also included fun places like a comedy club called The Funny Bone. There was also a fitness club and a fancy movie theater called Rave Cinemas. On the second floor, there are offices and about 136 apartments. This mix of living, working, and playing makes it a true mixed-use space.
Phase Two: More Fashion and Stores
The second part of The Greene opened in the fall of 2008. This phase focused on fashion. It added a big department store called Von Maur. Von Maur is known for its clothes, accessories, and beauty products. It's also famous for its great customer service, where employees sometimes send handwritten notes!
In 2014, The Greene announced even more growth. They built a new 35,000 square foot building for another national store, Nordstrom Rack.
A Place for Everyone
The Greene is designed to feel like a town square. It often hosts outdoor concerts and holiday events. During summer, kids love to play in the main fountain. Even in different seasons, many people visit The Greene. Parking in the lots and garages is free. Any money from metered parking helps a charity.
The Greene is a popular spot for people from nearby towns. These include Beavercreek, Ohio, Bellbrook, Ohio, Kettering, Ohio, Oakwood, Centerville, Ohio, and Springboro, Ohio.
Safety Rules at The Greene
To keep everyone safe, The Greene has a rule about age. After 9:00 p.m. every day, anyone under 16 years old needs to be with an adult to be on the property.
Tornado Event
On May 26, 2015, a small tornado hit the area around The Greene. It was an EF1 tornado, which means it had strong winds. The tornado flipped some cars and knocked down trees. Two people had minor injuries.
Some businesses in The Greene and nearby shopping centers were damaged. For example, a Kmart parking lot was cleared out. Ten cars were overturned at a Japanese restaurant, and a Waffle House restaurant also had damage to its roof. The tornado was on the ground for about one minute and traveled half a mile. Winds reached speeds over 100 miles per hour.
