The Heathens of Kummerow is a fun family comedy film from 1967. Its full German name means "The Heathens of Kummerow and Their Funny Pranks." This movie was made by both East and West Germany. What is the movie about?
The story takes place in a village called Kummerow, in a region called Pomerania. This is just before World War I and close to Easter. A group of boys in the village decide to bring back an old tradition.
This tradition is called "heathen baptism." Long ago, people in the village were said to have stayed in the water during their baptisms to show they didn't want to become Christian. This old story became a fun contest for the boys. They would stand in cold water, and the boy who could stay in the longest would be named the "heathen king."
The local pastor, Pastor Breithaupt, is not happy about this old custom. However, the boys' clever tricks come in handy later. The pastor and a cowherd named Krischan, who works illegally, get into trouble with the local miller, Düker. The boys' talent for playing pranks helps them out of this tricky situation.
