The Land Before Time VIII: The Big Freeze is an animated adventure musical film from 2001. It was released directly to video. This movie is the eighth one in the popular The Land Before Time series.
Story of the Big Freeze
The movie begins with Ducky and her brother Spike having some problems. Spike snores loudly, keeping Ducky awake at night. He also eats her special "tree stars," which their mom packed just for Ducky. Ducky feels upset but isn't sure how to tell Spike. Her friend Cera offers to help Ducky learn how to express her feelings.
Meanwhile, the young dinosaurs go to school. Their teacher is an old Pachyrhinosaurus named Mr. Thicknose. He claims to know everything and have been everywhere. Littlefoot is very curious and asks many questions, which sometimes annoys Mr. Thicknose. Mr. Thicknose even complains to Grandpa Longneck about Littlefoot. Grandpa Longneck gently explains to Littlefoot why it's important to be respectful to his teacher.
As Ducky continues to be distant with Spike, he finds a new friend. Spike meets Tippy, a young dinosaur from a group of Spiketails who have just arrived in the Great Valley. Spike starts spending more and more time with his new friends. Ducky soon begins to miss him.
One morning, everyone in the Valley wakes up to a big surprise: snow! The whole Valley is covered in a thick blanket of white. The young dinosaurs have a lot of fun playing in the snow. However, the grown-ups are not happy. They wonder why Mr. Thicknose, who is supposed to be the wisest, didn't warn them about the snow. They start to doubt if he really knows as much as he claims.
As the cold weather continues, the dinosaurs face difficulties. It's freezing, and there isn't enough food growing. The Spiketail herd decides to leave the Valley because they need a lot of food. Tippy's mother asks Ducky and Spike's mother, Mama Swimmer, if Spike can go with them. Mama Swimmer tells Spike he can choose to stay or leave. Spike is unsure, so Ducky, still angry, tells him to go. Spike agrees to leave with the Spiketails.
Soon after, Ducky feels very bad about what she said. She regrets her actions and secretly follows the Spiketail herd. When her friends Littlefoot, Cera, Petrie, and Chomper find out, they decide to go after her. Mr. Thicknose also joins them on their journey into the Mysterious Beyond.
During their adventure, they face a dangerous sharptooth, an Albertosaurus. The kids work together and defeat it using a giant snowball. They then find Ducky, who was also being chased by the same sharptooth. They soon discover a frozen pond. When they accidentally break the ice, they find a warm spring underneath. Nearby, there is plenty of fresh, green food.
While they relax in the warm water and eat, Mr. Thicknose shares a secret. He admits that most of his knowledge comes from stories. When he was young, he listened to other travelers' tales. As an adult, he simply shared those stories with the children in the Valley.
The sharptooth attacks them again. This time, Mr. Thicknose bravely saves the children. He pushes a large log down a hill, causing the sharptooth to trip and fall off a cliff. Later, the group tries to get back to the Valley, but a huge wall of snow blocks their way. Ducky remembers what Cera taught her about expressing anger. She suggests Cera gets really mad. Cera screams with all her might, and her loud yell causes the snow wall to collapse. This opens the way for the Valley's residents to pass through.
Meanwhile, the Spiketail herd is starving. Spike smells the warm spring and leads his new herd to it. He reunites with Ducky. However, Spike falls into a deep part of the spring and can't swim. Mama Swimmer jumps in and saves him. Tippy's mother then tells Mama Swimmer that Spike should stay with his own family. Ducky promises Spike that she will never get angry at him for snoring again.
