The Legend of Frosty the Snowman is an animated movie from 2005. It was made by Classic Media, Studio B Productions, and Top Draw Animation. This movie went straight to video, meaning it wasn't shown in cinemas first.

The famous actor Burt Reynolds tells the story. You'll hear Bill Fagerbakke as the voice of Frosty the Snowman and Kath Soucie as Tommy Tinkerton. Jared Faber created the music for the film. This movie is the fifth and final TV special about Frosty.

Plot Summary

Frosty the Snowman arrives in a town called Evergreen. It looks perfect, but the children there are unhappy. They have to follow many strict rules. Frosty tries to play with Tommy, the mayor's son. But Tommy is scared of his dad, Mayor Tinkerton. The mayor makes everyone follow a very tight schedule. He also seems to like Tommy's older brother, Charlie, more because Charlie always obeys.

Since Tommy isn't ready to play, Frosty finds Tommy's friend, Walter Wader. Walter is a bit nervous. Frosty convinces Walter to play in the snow one night. Walter has so much fun that he feels confident the next day at school.

News spreads that Walter broke curfew and had fun. The school principal, Hank Pankley, complains to Mayor Tinkerton. Later, Walter and Charlie get into a food fight at lunch. Principal Pankley gives them both detention. Mayor Tinkerton takes a special "#1" pin from Charlie. He then asks Walter about what happened. Walter says he was "playing with a magical snowman." This makes Mayor Tinkerton act strangely. Principal Pankley tells the mayor that Walter's story isn't true. Secretly, the principal wants to take the mayor's job.

After school, Charlie makes fun of Walter for believing in Frosty. But then Frosty appears outside the school. Charlie and Walter join him. Tommy leaves to follow Sara Simple, a girl he likes. But Frosty's hat leads Tommy to the library instead. There, Tommy finds an old comic book about Frosty. The comic tells about a boy whose dad was a magician. The dad didn't believe in magic. But the boy used his dad's hat to bring Frosty to life. Tommy reads that the boy spent the rest of winter looking for Frosty. But the rest of the comic pages are blank.

Mayor Tinkerton becomes more and more worried. He finds Tommy and gives him the "#1" pin. He admits that Charlie and other kids told him the same story about a magic snowman. He asks Tommy to tell him if anything else strange happens. Tommy wears the pin to school, but his friends avoid him. They think he's the mayor's new favorite. Tommy then sees his mom looking at old photos of his dad. He realizes that the boy in the comic book is actually his own father, Mayor Tinkerton!

Frosty keeps playing with the children, including Sara. They start breaking the town's rules. This makes their parents upset, and Mayor Tinkerton gets very stressed. Principal Pankley convinces the mayor to let him become mayor at the next town meeting. Pankley promises to bring back order. He also notices Walter feels left out of playing with Frosty. Pankley tricks Walter into helping him set a trap for Frosty. Walter goes ice skating with Frosty on a frozen pond. Frosty falls through the ice and melts. This allows Pankley to steal Frosty's magical hat.

As Tommy tries to read the comic, the blank pages suddenly fill themselves in. It shows that Principal Pankley stole the hat and hid it the same winter Mayor Tinkerton was looking for Frosty. The comic warns that Pankley will take over Evergreen completely if he succeeds. Tommy shows the complete comic to his friends. They believe him again. Together, they get the hat back from the school and bring Frosty back to life!

The adults notice their children are missing. They go into the woods and find them dancing with Frosty. Principal Pankley tries to stop them. Tommy gives the "#1" pin back to his dad. He apologizes for not obeying him. But Mayor Tinkerton tells his son he did the right thing. He happily recognizes Frosty and his father's hat. Mayor Tinkerton realizes Pankley's trickery and takes back his job as mayor. Walter hits Pankley with a snowball, and Frosty starts a big snowball fight with all the adults.

The adults and children make up. Mayor Tinkerton starts to believe in magic again. He doesn't want his sons to grow up without magic, like he did. He also removes all the strict rules and curfews from the town. The movie's narrator is revealed to be an older Tommy. He now lives with Sara, and he hears her calling him home from the cold.

About the Movie

This movie is loosely connected to the original 1969 television special by Rankin/Bass. That special was based on the 1950 Christmas song "Frosty the Snowman" by Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins. Frosty's design in this movie, created by Paul Coker, Jr., looks exactly the same as in the original. Also, Tommy's grandfather is clearly Professor Hinkle, who was the bad guy in the first special but changed his ways.

Even though Santa Claus is mentioned, the movie doesn't directly talk about Christmas. Still, this special is more like the original Frosty the Snowman than the 1992 sequel, Frosty Returns. This film was made in late 2004, but it wasn't released until a year later, in 2005.

The movie used to air every year on Cartoon Network from 2005 until December 11, 2011. Then, it moved to a channel called Kids & Teens TV, which stopped broadcasting in 2019. After that, AMC started showing the special as part of their Best Christmas Ever event. The rights to show the film are now held by NBCUniversal Television Distribution. This happened after their parent company, Comcast, bought DreamWorks Animation, which had acquired Classic Media in 2012. DreamWorks also put the special on YouTube for free on November 30, 2017, along with the original Frosty the Snowman special.
