The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning is an animated fantasy movie from 2008. It was made by DisneyToon Studios in Australia. This film is a prequel to Disney's famous 1989 movie, The Little Mermaid. This means it tells a story that happened before the first movie. It's also the third and final movie in The Little Mermaid series.
The movie was directed by Peggy Holmes. It shows Ariel when she was younger. In this story, all music has been banned from the underwater kingdom of Atlantica. King Triton made this rule after his wife, Queen Athena, died. Ariel tries to bring music back to her home.
Many of the original voice actors returned for this movie. Jodi Benson voices Ariel, and Samuel E. Wright is the voice of Sebastian. Sally Field voices the new villain, Marina Del Rey. Jim Cummings voices King Triton in this film. The movie was released on August 26, 2008.
What's the Story About?
The story begins in the underwater kingdom of Atlantica. King Triton and his wife, Queen Athena, rule the kingdom. It is a happy place filled with music. They have seven daughters, and the youngest is Ariel.
One day, while the merpeople are relaxing, a pirate ship appears. Everyone tries to escape. Queen Athena tries to save a special music box. Sadly, she is killed by the ship. King Triton is heartbroken by her death. He throws the music box away and bans all music from Atlantica forever.
Ten years later, Ariel and her sisters live a very strict life. Their governess, Marina Del Rey, makes sure they follow all the rules. Marina wants to be King Triton's main assistant, a job that Sebastian the crab has. Ariel doesn't like their strict life and often argues with her father.
One day, Ariel meets Flounder, a young fish. She follows him to a secret underground music club. Ariel is so happy to hear music again! She is surprised to see Sebastian performing there. When Ariel is discovered, the band stops playing. They worry she will tell her father. But Ariel sings about her love for music and remembering her mother. She then joins the club.
Ariel returns to the palace, and her sisters ask where she was. She tells them about the club. The next night, her sisters also go to the club to have fun. Marina finds out and tells King Triton. Triton gets very angry and destroys the club with his trident. Sebastian, Flounder, and the band are sent to prison. Marina gets the job she wanted. Triton keeps his daughters inside the palace. Ariel tells her father that he wouldn't hate music if her mother were still alive.
That night, Ariel frees her friends from prison. They leave Atlantica. Sebastian leads them to a deserted place. There, Ariel finds Queen Athena's music box. Ariel, Flounder, and Sebastian decide to return to Atlantica. They hope the music box will change King Triton's mind. He hasn't been happy since Athena died.
On their way back, Marina and her electric eels attack them. Marina wants to stop them so she can keep her new job. A fight begins. Flounder and Ariel are saved by the band members. King Triton arrives and sees Ariel helping the band fight the eels. Marina tries to hurt Sebastian, but Ariel protects him and faints. Triton blames himself. He sings "Athena's Song," and Ariel wakes up. Triton apologizes for not listening to her. He sends her home and has Marina arrested.
The next day, thanks to Ariel, King Triton brings music back to Atlantica. He makes Sebastian the kingdom's first official court composer. Everyone is happy, except Marina, who is in jail.
