The Lumen is a super tall apartment building in the Playhouse Square area of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. It was finished in 2020. This building has 34 floors and stands about 396 feet (120.7 meters) tall. You can find it at the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 17th Street. It is right next to the Hanna Building. Across Euclid Avenue is the Keith Building. The Lumen is only the second new apartment building built in downtown Cleveland since the 1970s. The first was The Beacon, which opened in 2019.

What is The Lumen?
The Lumen is a modern residential skyscraper. It offers many homes for people who want to live in the heart of Cleveland. This building helps make the Playhouse Square area a lively place to live. It shows how cities are growing and changing.
Why was The Lumen built?
For a long time, the land where The Lumen now stands was just a big parking lot. The people at Playhouse Square had a big dream. They wanted to make their theater district a place where people could also live. Art Falco, who used to lead Playhouse Square, had this vision. The Lumen helps make that dream come true.
Who helped build it?
To make this big project happen, Playhouse Square worked with several expert companies. They hired Hines as the development manager. This company helps guide the whole building process. Gilbane, from Providence, Rhode Island, was the builder. They are the ones who actually constructed the tower. Finally, Solomon Cordwell Buenz, an international architecture firm from Chicago, designed the building.
How much did it cost?
Building The Lumen was a big project, costing about $135 million. In late 2018, the Cuyahoga County Council helped out. They approved a $10 million loan for Playhouse Square to help build the tower. This shows how important the project was for the city.
What's inside The Lumen?
The Lumen is a very large apartment complex. It has 318 apartment homes for people to live in. There are also 550 parking spaces for cars. Plus, the building has 22,000 square feet of common space. This is space that all residents can share and enjoy. It makes The Lumen one of the biggest apartment buildings in downtown Cleveland.
What was found during construction?
When the construction crews started digging, they found something interesting. They discovered parts of old foundations from other projects that were once underground. This is a cool reminder of the history hidden beneath the city streets.
