Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Pacific Club is a special social club located in Honolulu, Hawaii. It has a long and interesting history, serving as a gathering place for many important people over the years.

History of the Pacific Club

Early Beginnings and Name Changes

The Pacific Club was started in 1851 by William Lowthian Green, who was also its first president. When it first opened, it was called "The Mess." Later, because many of its members were from Britain, it became known as "The British Club." In 1892, the club changed its name one last time to "The Pacific Club," which it is still called today.

Moving to a New Home

For many years, the club moved to different locations around Honolulu. Finally, in 1926, it found its permanent home. This new location was once the estate of Archibald Scott Cleghorn and was also the birthplace of Princess Kaʻiulani, a famous Hawaiian princess.

Modern Design and Growth

In 1959, a new building for the club was designed by a well-known architect named Vladimir Ossipoff. This building featured an open lanai, which is a type of covered porch or veranda common in Hawaii. The design was so good that it won an award from the Hawaii American Institute of Architects in 1965. The club continued to grow, and by 1991, it had more than 1,000 members.

Notable Members

Over the years, many interesting people have been members of The Pacific Club. These include Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank and biologist David Lack. Even King Kamehameha V, a Hawaiian monarch, became a member in 1870.
