Discovering the Park Place-Grand Avenue District
This historic district is home to many interesting buildings. When it was first recognized, it had 75 important structures. Most of these were historic homes.
The area was where successful business people from Keokuk built their houses. Some homes were built as early as 1856. However, most of the houses were built between 1900 and 1930.
What Makes the Homes Unique?
The houses in the district have different styles. Homes on Orleans and Park Place are usually smaller. They are built on smaller pieces of land. These are found at the southern end of the district.
Further north, along Grand Avenue, the houses are often larger. Many of the newer homes are located north of Tenth Street. It is thought that many famous architects designed these houses.
Architectural Styles You Can See
The homes show many different architectural styles. These styles were popular when the houses were built. You can see a variety of designs from the past.
Two homes in this district are so important that they are listed separately. These are the John N. and Mary L. (Rankin) Irwin House, built in 1856, and the C. R. Joy House, built in 1897. They are also on the National Register of Historic Places.
