The Park at River Walk, also called "River Walk Park," is a fun public park in Bakersfield, California. It covers about 32 acres (130,000 m²) and has two lakes. These lakes are connected by a winding stream.

The park is also home to the Spectrum Amphitheater. This is a big outdoor stage where concerts and shows happen. It used to be called the Bright House Amphitheater. The park is right next to the Kern River Bike Trail. It's a great place to visit!

Park History

The land where The Park at River Walk now stands was once an unusual shape. It was L-shaped and had limited access from streets. However, it had a lot of space next to the Kern River and the Kern River Parkway. This made it a perfect spot for a large public park.

Because it was such a good location, the land was given to the City of Bakersfield in 1995. The city worked with developers to turn the land into a beautiful park. The park officially opened in 2006. It became a central part of the area, surrounded by homes, shops, and businesses.

What Can You Do at the Park?

The Park at River Walk has many cool features for visitors.

Lakes and Streams

The park has two lakes. These lakes help collect and store water underground. The upper lake is about 3 acres (12,000 m²) big. The lower lake is about 2 acres (8,100 m²) and is a popular spot for fishing. A stream connects both lakes, flowing gently through the park. You can cross the stream using one of four bridges.

The Spectrum Amphitheater

The main attraction at the park is the Spectrum Amphitheater. The stage looks like an island, with the lake behind it. A stream runs in front of the stage. This design makes it a unique place for performances. There's even a hidden road for big equipment to get onto the stage.

Other Fun Spots

You'll find six covered picnic areas throughout the park. These areas can hold groups of 16 to 48 people. There are also many smaller picnic tables and barbecues. Kids can enjoy the playground, and there's a lovely gazebo on the west side of the park.

Park Design and Nature

The park was designed to feel like a peaceful mountain getaway. The buildings have river rock walls and brown tile roofs. The footbridges have metal arches and wooden floors. Many of the plants in the park are native to the river area. You'll also see lots of flowering trees, which make the park look different and beautiful in every season.
