The Pizza Underground was a fun American comedy rock band from New York City. They were known for making funny parody songs. These songs were based on tunes by another famous band called the Velvet Underground. But instead of the original lyrics, The Pizza Underground sang about pizza!
The band had five members. Macaulay Culkin played the kazoo and percussion, and also sang. Matt Colbourn played guitar and sang. Phoebe Kreutz played the glockenspiel and sang. Deenah Vollmer used a pizza box as a drum and sang. Austin Kilham played the tambourine and sang. A cool thing they did was give out free pizzas at their concerts!
How the Band Started
The idea for The Pizza Underground began in 2012. Deenah Vollmer, who played the pizza box, said it started as a joke. They soon found out they could change almost any word in a song to "slice" or "cheese"!
Phoebe Kreutz, the glockenspiel player, even joked that the original Velvet Underground songs were secretly about pizza. They just had to change the words to fit the times.
Early Performances and Videos
On November 11, 2013, the band recorded a live demo. They did this right in Macaulay Culkin's apartment. Later that month, they performed at a special show. This show honored Lou Reed, a famous musician from The Velvet Underground.
In December 2013, a video of Macaulay Culkin eating a cheese pizza went viral online. He was making a funny video to promote The Pizza Underground. It was a parody of an old video where artist Andy Warhol ate a Burger King Whopper.
In January 2014, the group released their first music video. It featured parodies of several Velvet Underground songs. Some of their funny song titles included "All Pizza Parties" and "Take a Bite of the Wild Slice." In the video, the band played on a bed of pizza boxes. The walls were covered in pizza patterns, and band members wore pizza slices as masks.
Touring and Later Years
In 2014, the band released their demo on cassette tapes. These tapes came in yellow, white, and red colors. That same year, they went on an 18-show tour across North America. They called their tour Fresh to Your Door.
The band also released another live album called Live at Chop Suey. This album was recorded during a show in Seattle, Washington.
In January 2018, Macaulay Culkin shared some news in an interview. He announced that The Pizza Underground had decided to break up.
