The Road Runner Show was a fun American cartoon show. It brought together classic Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons. These cartoons were originally part of the famous Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series. They were made by Warner Bros. Cartoons from 1949 to 1964. Later cartoons for the show were made by another company called DePatie–Freleng Enterprises. This company also created the opening and closing parts of the show.
About the Show's History
The Road Runner Show first aired on CBS from 1966 to 1968. It ran for two seasons. Later, CBS combined it with The Bugs Bunny Show. This new show was called The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour. This meant the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote often shared an hour with Bugs Bunny.
In 1971, ABC started showing The Road Runner Show. It aired for two more seasons until 1973. ABC stopped airing it because some scenes were seen as too action-packed. After that, CBS got the show back. They showed reruns as part of The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour until the mid-1980s.
Each episode of The Road Runner Show usually had a few different cartoons. It would feature one Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote cartoon. In the middle, there was often a cartoon with Tweety and Sylvester. The third part usually showed other Warner Bros. characters. These included Elmer Fudd, Foghorn Leghorn, Speedy Gonzales, Pepe Le Pew, and Hippety Hopper. The start of each cartoon had a simple title card. It played a short version of the song The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down.
The Catchy Theme Song
The theme song for The Road Runner Show was written and sung by Barbara Cameron. It's a very famous tune! In 1999, a Mexican band called Chicos de Barrio covered the song. It was also made fun of in the show Histeria!.
The band Barenaked Ladies also covered the song. Barbara Cameron even re-recorded it with her son, Doug Cameron. He is a jazz violinist. They added the iconic "Beep-Beep" sound from the cartoons to their version. This new recording was on his album Different Hats in 2008. An instrumental (music without singing) version of the song was used for the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote parts of The Looney Tunes Show.
