History of The Salisbury Pub
The Salisbury pub was built around 1899. It is part of a larger six-story building. Before this pub, another one stood in the same spot, known by names like the Coach and Horses.
A Look Inside: Art and Design
The inside of The Salisbury is very important. Historic England has given it a special Grade II listing. This means it is a building of historical interest. The pub's interior is also on CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. This list includes pubs with important historical designs.
The Salisbury is famous for its amazing etched and polished glass. It also has beautiful carved wooden details. You might spot an "SS" design etched into the glass. This is because the pub was first called the "Salisbury Stores." Using "Stores" in a pub name was common back then.
You can also see unique Art Nouveau bronze statues of nymphs inside. These figures hold long-stemmed flowers with light bulbs in the middle. These special lights are thought to be part of the original design.
Who Was Lord Salisbury?
The pub is named after Lord Salisbury (1830–1903). He was an important British politician. Lord Salisbury served as the Prime Minister of Britain three times between 1885 and 1902.
The Cecil family, Lord Salisbury's family, still owns the building today. If you look above the corner door, you can see the Cecil family's coat of arms. It is placed between two angels supporting a canopy. A nearby street, Cecil Court, is also named after this famous family.
The Salisbury in Films
The Salisbury pub has appeared in movies. One famous film is the 1961 British suspense movie Victim. This movie was directed by Basil Dearden. It starred actors Dirk Bogarde and Sylvia Syms. Scenes from the film were shot both inside and outside The Salisbury.
