About The Shiny Show
The Shiny Show was designed to be both entertaining and educational. It helped young viewers learn new facts and test their knowledge. The show combined quiz questions with short plays performed by the animal characters. This made learning interactive and enjoyable for its audience.
Meet the Characters
The show featured a lively group of puppet characters. They each had unique personalities and helped host the quiz.
Tigs the Tiger
Tigs is an orange tiger known for her confident and sometimes boastful personality. She is very energetic and often takes the lead in the short plays or poems. These plays happen between the quiz rounds. Tigs has a special lucky item named Mr. Cheese. It is a plastic cheese shape that makes a squeaking sound when squeezed. Sue Monroe provided Tigs' voice. Tigs' puppet design was updated for the second season of the show.
Mukka the Monkey
Mukka is a purple monkey who is extremely energetic and always on the go. He has his own lucky item called Fluffy Stuff. Mukka also has a small pet lump he calls Lumpy. Wim Booth was the voice actor for Mukka.
Dogsby the Dog
Dogsby is a brown dog and often the most sensible member of the group. He usually stays calm, even in exciting situations. Dogsby's lucky item is a purple and yellow hat called Lucky Hat. He never wears it, believing he "might get too lucky!" Dogsby really loves cabbages. He sometimes struggles with identifying colors correctly. Sally Preisig voiced Dogsby in Series 1, and Sam Mason took over for Series 2.
Alarmorama the Machine
Alarmorama is a special toy machine located on a wall in the living room set. While Alarmorama doesn't speak, it communicates using various sounds and actions. This machine plays several important roles in the show:
- It plays the show's theme song to start each episode.
- It chooses which character will be the "quizzer" for that episode. The quizzer asks all the questions.
- It plays a special song for the chosen quizzer.
- It signals the start of each quiz round.
- It awards "shinies" and the "Super Shiny" to the home audience.
- It waves goodbye at the end of the show, indicating it's over.
Sometimes, when Mukka and Tigs were being very noisy, Dogsby would thank Alarmorama for starting the next round. He would often sound relieved.
How the Quiz Works
The quiz in The Shiny Show had three main rounds. Before each round, the animal contestants watched a short film. The questions in the quiz were based on these films. The goal was to answer as many questions correctly as possible. For every correct answer, players would "give themselves a shiny." The player who answered the most questions correctly won the "Super Shiny." If there was a tie, both players won the Super Shiny. The quizzer always reminded viewers at home that if they answered many questions correctly, they were winners too! Between the quiz rounds, Tigs, Mukka, and Dogsby performed short stories or plays. These performances were often related to the themes of the quiz films.
The Show Around the World
The Shiny Show was also broadcast in a few other countries. An Albanian version, titled Shfaqja vezulluese, aired on TV Klan from 2008 to July 2013. There was also a Polish version called Błyśnij-błyskula, which started airing on CBeebies in Poland in 2008. A Spanish version of the show was known as A Jugar y Adivinar.
