Journey to the South Pole
In this episode, Korra gets a new teacher named Unalaq. He is her uncle and the chief of the Northern Water Tribe. Unalaq, Korra, her friends, and his children go on a trip to the South Pole. Unalaq wants Korra to open a special door there. This door leads to the spirit world.
He explains that the southern part of the world has lost its connection to spirits. Because of this, the spirits are angry. They cause a big "Everstorm" around the pole. In the North, spirits dance as beautiful lights in the sky. But in the South, they are causing trouble.
Tonraq's Past
Korra's father, Tonraq, does not seem to like his brother Unalaq. Still, Tonraq insists on going with the group. He tells Korra a secret about his past. His own father, the chieftain, sent him away from the North. This happened because Tonraq accidentally made spirits angry. He destroyed a forest while chasing some bad guys.
Korra learns this and remembers something else. In the last episode, she found out that Tenzin and Tonraq decided she should grow up safely. They kept her hidden at the South Pole. This made Korra very upset. She then told her father to leave the group.
Spirit Portal and Northern Invasion
Meanwhile, Tenzin and his family arrive at the Southern Air Temple. The Air Acolytes, who live there, are very excited to see them. Tenzin's oldest daughter, Jinora, is drawn to the statues of past Avatars. She looks closely at Aang's statue. She also sees a very old Avatar she does not know.
Back at the South Pole, Korra works to open the spirit portal. Dark spirits try to stop her, but she succeeds. When the portal opens, the Southern Lights appear in the sky. These are the beautiful dancing lights that spirits make.
After opening the portal, the group returns to a festival. There, they see something surprising. Soldiers from the Northern Water Tribe are invading. Unalaq says they are there to help the South. He wants the two Water Tribes to become one again.
