The Story of the Champions of the Round Table is an exciting adventure book written by American author and artist Howard Pyle. It was published in 1905. This novel shares many famous stories from the legends of King Arthur. These tales include brave knights like Sir Launcelot, Sir Tristram, and Sir Percival. The book is part of a series that brings these classic stories to life for young readers.

Adventures of the Knights of the Round Table

This book tells the tales of several important knights who served King Arthur. It focuses on their journeys, challenges, and how they became heroes. The stories are full of courage, honor, and magic from the old legends.

The Story of Sir Percival

Percival grew up far away from King Arthur's kingdom. He lived with his mother in a quiet tower. When he was 19 years old, Percival saw a knight riding by. This sight made him very curious about knighthood. He decided to leave his home to become a knight himself.

Percival's Early Journey

At first, Percival's armor was made of twigs, which caused others to make fun of him. One day, he found a beautiful tent, which he thought was a church. Inside, he met a lovely lady named Yvette. He was charmed by her and promised to marry her after he became a famous knight. They exchanged rings as a promise.

Becoming a Knight

Later, Percival met Queen Guinevere, who was being bothered by a very strong knight. Sir Kay, who was supposed to protect the Queen, was too scared to fight this knight. Percival, who was mistaken for a jester, bravely stepped in to fight instead. A quiet young woman named Yolande praised Percival and scolded Sir Kay. Sir Kay then hit Yolande. Percival promised Sir Kay that he would get revenge for Yolande. He later defeated the knight who had troubled the Queen. After this, Percival was welcomed into King Arthur's court as a true knight. Sir Launcelot helped train Percival, and he received proper knightly armor.

The Sorceress Vivien

Percival then came across a beautiful, colorful castle. This castle belonged to a powerful sorceress named Vivien. She was known for causing trouble across the kingdom. The rocks around her castle were actually people she had turned into stone. Percival fought Vivien and almost defeated her. However, he felt pity for her because she was so beautiful and spared her life.

Percival's Quest and Vision

Percival felt he had proven himself as a knight. He decided to search for his beloved Yvette. When he finally found her father's castle, he saw that her father was very sad. The father led Percival to a room where Yvette was lying. Percival learned that she had passed away. He was heartbroken but held back his tears. He then vowed that he would never marry anyone else. While thinking about these sad events, Percival saw a special vision. He saw two young boys. One held a spear, and the other held a chalice. These were the Holy Grail and the Holy Spear. Percival was the first knight of the Round Table to see this amazing vision.
