Who Are The Three Doctors?
This amazing trio includes Dr. Rameck Hunt, Dr. Sampson Davis, and Dr. George Jenkins. They all grew up in Newark, New Jersey, in neighborhoods where many families faced challenges. They first met as friends in high school at University High School.
Growing Up in Newark
The three doctors lived in public housing and came from families with low incomes. They didn't have fathers living with them. Despite these difficulties, they became very close friends. During high school, they made a promise to each other. This promise was to finish high school, go to college, and then attend medical school together. They often say that their school counselor, Carla Dickson, helped them a lot during their teenage years.
Their College Journey
After high school, they all went to Seton Hall University. They studied pre-medicine and pre-dental courses there. They were able to attend thanks to a scholarship program. This was a big step toward keeping their promise.
Meet Each Doctor
Each of the three doctors has an inspiring story about how they achieved their goals.
Dr. Rameck Hunt's Story
Dr. Rameck Hunt was mostly raised by his grandmother. He had a tough time in school sometimes and often got into trouble. He also struggled with anger. But when he became friends with Sampson and George in high school, he decided to change his life for the better.
After his studies at Seton Hall, he went to Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He then completed his training in internal medicine at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Today, Dr. Hunt is a certified internist at University Medical Center of Princeton. He also teaches as an assistant professor at his old medical school.
Dr. Sampson Davis's Story
Dr. Sampson Davis was the fifth of six children in his family. He grew up in a neighborhood that was known for crime. However, he was excellent in school. He often says that getting an education "saved his life."
Like Dr. Hunt, he also went to medical school at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He then trained in emergency medicine at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Now, he works as an attending physician there, helping people in emergencies.
Dr. George Jenkins's Story
Dr. George Jenkins was born in Newark on February 6, 1973. He was inspired to become a dentist when he was a teenager. He had a visit to the dentist's office to get braces, and that experience sparked his interest.
After his undergraduate studies at Seton Hall, he earned his D.M.D. (Doctor of Dental Medicine) from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He is now an assistant professor of clinical dentistry at Columbia University.
Inspiring Others
The Three Doctors usually speak together as a group. They travel all over the United States, sharing their story at different events throughout the year. They also visit schools and other places to talk to young people. Their goal is to show kids that with hard work and determination, they can overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.
