What the Statue Shows
The statue shows three bronze figures. These figures represent Ford C. Greene, Ralph A. Long Jr., and Lawrence Williams. In September 1961, these three young men made history. They were the very first African American students to join Georgia Tech.
Where to Find the Statue
You can find The Three Pioneers in an area of the Georgia Tech campus called Harrison Square. This square is named after Edwin D. Harrison. He was the president of Georgia Tech when these students first enrolled. Another important statue, Continuing the Conversation, which honors Rosa Parks, is also in Harrison Square.
Unveiling the Trailblazers
The Three Pioneers statue was officially shown to the public on September 4, 2019. On the same day, another statue called The First Graduate was also dedicated. This second statue honors Ronald Yancey. He was the first African American student to graduate from Georgia Tech. It is located at the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons.
Together, these two statues are known as the Trailblazers statues. The word "trailblazers" means people who are the first to do something important. Ford C. Greene, Ralph A. Long Jr., Lawrence Williams, and Ronald Yancey all attended the special unveiling ceremonies for their statues.
