What's Inside The Warehouse Theatre?
The Warehouse Theatre is more than just a rehearsal space. It has many useful areas for the drama club:
- A workshop where they build amazing sets for their plays.
- A huge collection of costumes and props (things actors use on stage).
- A meeting room for planning and discussions.
- Equipment for lighting and sound to make shows look and sound great.
- A kitchen for snacks and drinks during long rehearsals.
A Look Back: History of The Warehouse Theatre
The building that is now The Warehouse Theatre has a long history. Back in the 1930s, it was a big storage area for coal. This coal was used by the local Devenish Brewery, which was nearby in Hope Square.
In 1990, the brewery stopped making beer in large amounts, so the building was no longer needed. It sat empty until 1993, when the Weymouth Drama Club found it. They worked hard to clean it up and turn it into the creative space it is today.
The club uses the building mainly for their own play rehearsals. However, they also rent out their large collection of costumes to other people! Even though the Weymouth Drama Club is made up of volunteers (this is called Amateur Dramatics), they often get help and advice from professional theatre experts. The club also holds fun social events there.
The club works hard to keep the building's original look and feel, while also making sure it has modern facilities. They often hold fundraising events at the Warehouse to help pay for the building's upkeep and to fund their new plays.
