The Welldeserved Fox (Vietnamese: Đáng đời thằng Cáo) is a special animated movie from Vietnam. It was made in 1959 and directed by Lê Minh Hiền and Trương Qua. This film is important because it was one of the very first animated movies ever made in North Vietnam! It tells a fun story about animals and teaches a good lesson.

What's the Story About?

This movie is based on a poem called The Fox and the Hive. The poem was written by Hồ Chí Minh, who was a very important leader and poet in Vietnam.

The Forest Friends

In a lively forest, there lived a friendly Bear and a small Chicken. One day, a sneaky Fox tried to trick the Chicken. The Fox wanted to eat the Chicken for his meal! But luckily, the clever Chicken managed to escape from the Fox.

Chasing the Fox Away

After the Chicken got away, the kind Bear went to find the Chicken. The Bear then called for help from a group of busy Bees. Together, the Bear and the Bees worked to chase the tricky Fox far away from the forest. This showed the Fox that his bad behavior would not be rewarded.

The movie ends with a message that says:

A practice of class Vietnamese Animated Film
(Bài thực-tập của lớp hoạt-họa Việt-nam)

This means the film was like a practice project for new animators in Vietnam.

How Was the Movie Made?

The Welldeserved Fox is known as the very first animated movie made in North Vietnam. Making this film was a big challenge for the animators.

Early Animation Challenges

Originally, the filmmakers planned for the movie to be about 300 meters long and last for 10 minutes. This would have needed about 15,000 drawings! These drawings were supposed to be on special clear sheets called cellophane, each measuring 18x24cm.

However, Vietnam did not have all the special equipment and materials needed back then. So, the talented artists had to be very creative!

Creative Solutions

Instead of cellophane, the drawers used regular typewriter papers. They soaked these papers in oil to make them see-through. This allowed them to layer the drawings, just like real animation cells.

Also, their "desks" were not fancy animation tables. They used glass windows inside the Vietnam Animation Studio's building on Hoàng Hoa Thám Street in Hanoi. They would shine lights through the windows to trace and draw their characters.

Meet the Animators

Some of the amazing artists who worked on this pioneering film include:

  • Lê Minh Hiền
  • Trương Qua
  • Hồ Quảng

Awards and Recognition

The Welldeserved Fox was a very important film for Vietnamese animation. It even won a special award!

Golden Lotus Prize

In 1973, the movie received the Golden Lotus prize at the Vietnam Film Festival II. This award was given to the best artists, Hồ Quảng and Trương Qua, for their excellent work on the film. It showed how much their hard work and creativity were appreciated.
