The Yardbirds' Story
The Yardbirds began as a blues band. Over time, music trends changed in the 1960s. The band started playing more pop-style music. This change made Eric Clapton decide to leave the group.
Famous Guitarists
When Eric Clapton left, he suggested Jimmy Page as a replacement. At that time, Jimmy Page was a studio musician. This meant he played on many records for different stars. However, he was not a member of one specific band.
Jimmy Page did not want to give up his studio work. So, he suggested Jeff Beck join the band instead. Later, Jimmy Page did join The Yardbirds. He played both bass and lead guitar. Having these three guitar legends in one band's history is very special!
From Yardbirds to Led Zeppelin
Towards the end of the 1960s, The Yardbirds broke up. This happened while they were on tour. Jimmy Page still wanted to keep playing music. He decided to form a new band.
He called this new group "The New Yardbirds." It included singer Robert Plant, bassist John Paul Jones, and drummer John "Bonzo" Bonham. This group soon got a different name. It is said that Keith Moon, the drummer for the band The Who, gave them the idea. Moon once joked that their band would go over "like a lead zeppelin." This funny comment led to the new band's name: Led Zeppelin.
