Theobald de Verdun (born 1278, died 1316) was an important figure in medieval England and Ireland. He was the second, but oldest surviving, son of Theobald de Verdun, who was the 1st Baron Verdun. His family came from Alton in Staffordshire, England. Theobald's mother was Margery de Bohun.
The Verdun family had a long history. Theobald's great-great-great-grandfather, Bertram de Verdun, helped King Henry II of England when he invaded Ireland in 1171. Bertram was in charge of supplies and provisions for the army. Because of this, the Verdun family became major landowners in Ireland, especially in areas like County Louth and County Meath.

Theobald's Life and Role
Theobald de Verdun spent most of his life in Ireland. He held a very important job there called Justiciar of Ireland from 1314 to 1315. A Justiciar was like a chief governor or a top judge, representing the King in Ireland.
While Theobald was loyal to the King, his three younger brothers caused some trouble. They rebelled against the Crown between 1312 and 1313. However, Theobald himself seemed to stay on the King's side.
Theobald's Marriages and Children
Theobald de Verdun was married twice and had several children.
First Marriage
Theobald's first wife was Maud (also known as Matilda) Mortimer. She was the daughter of Edmund Mortimer, 2nd Baron Mortimer. Theobald and Maud had several children:
- John de Verdun: He sadly died when he was young and did not have any children.
- William de Verdun: He also died young and did not have any children.
- Joan de Verdun: She was married twice. Her first husband, William de Montacute, died before they could fully marry. She then married Thomas de Furnival, who was the 2nd Baron Furnivall.
- Elizabeth de Verdun: She married Bartholomew Burghersh, 1st Baron Burghersh.
- Margery de Verdun: She was married three times. Her first husband was William le Blount, Lord Blount. After he died, she married Sir Mark Hussey. Her third husband was Sir John de Crophull. Margery's family line eventually led to Catherine Parr, who became the sixth wife of King Henry VIII of England.
Second Marriage
After Maud passed away, Theobald married Elizabeth de Clare. Elizabeth was the widow of John de Burgh (died 1313). She was also a very important person herself, being the daughter of Gilbert de Clare, 7th Earl of Gloucester and Joan of Acre. Joan of Acre was the daughter of King Edward I of England and Queen Eleanor of Castile.
Theobald and Elizabeth had one daughter:
- Isabel de Verdun: She was born on March 21, 1317, after her father had already passed away. She later married Henry Ferrers, 2nd Baron Ferrers of Groby.
Death and Legacy
Theobald de Verdun died on July 27, 1316, at Alton Castle in Staffordshire. He passed away from a serious illness called typhoid. He was buried at Croxden Abbey on September 19, 1316.
His death happened during a difficult time in Ireland, known as the Bruce campaign in Ireland. This was when Scottish forces were invading Ireland. Because Theobald died, his lands in Ireland were left without a strong leader and were at risk from the invading army.
The Verdun family's lands in Ireland were then divided among his four daughters. Some of the family's estates later went to Theobald's surviving brothers, Nicholas and Milo, and then to their sons.
