Theutbald I (bishop of Langres) facts for kids
Theutbald I (also known as Theobald) was an important leader in the church. He became the bishop of Langres in France and held this position until he passed away on August 16, 856. He was chosen to take over from a previous bishop named Alberic, who died in 838. We know for sure that Theutbald was serving as bishop by the year 842. Some historians believe he might have come from a powerful family in Bavaria that had many church leaders in Langres since 769.
The Start of a Big War
In 841, a major conflict began between the three sons of Emperor Louis the Pious. Theutbald and another important leader, Count Warin of Langres, decided to support the youngest brother, Charles the Bald.
Supporting Charles the Bald
Theutbald showed his support for Charles the Bald by being with him and his army on April 13 in a city called Sens. He also celebrated Easter with Charles in Troyes on April 17. Because Theutbald and Count Warin helped Charles, the area of Langres ended up on Charles's side of the border. This happened after the Treaty of Verdun was signed in 843, which finally ended the war between the brothers.
