Thierry Omeyer, born on November 2, 1976, is a famous French handball goalkeeper who is now retired. He played for the French national team starting in 1999. He won many big titles with them, including being a world champion five times, a European champion three times, and an Olympic champion twice.
Many people think he is one of the best handball goalkeepers ever. In 2008, he was even named the best player in the world by the International Handball Federation. His nickname at his old club, THW Kiel, was Die Mauer, which means 'The Wall' in German.

Thierry Omeyer's Club Journey
Thierry Omeyer started playing handball when he was 9 years old in a town called Cernay. In 1994, he joined his first professional team, Sélestat. He was so good at saving shots that the top French club, Montpellier, noticed him.
Success with Montpellier Handball
At Montpellier, Thierry quickly became the main goalkeeper. He helped his team win five French championships between 2002 and 2006. They also won five national cups. The most exciting win was in 2003 when they won the EHF Champions League. No French club had ever won this big European title before!
Moving to Germany: THW Kiel
In 2006, Thierry decided to play in a tougher league. He moved to Germany and joined the club THW Kiel. There, he won both the German championship (the Bundesliga) and the national cup in 2007 and 2008. He also helped THW Kiel win the Champions League three times: in 2007, 2010, and 2012.
Returning to France and Retirement
On April 15, 2014, it was announced that Thierry Omeyer would join Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). He played his last professional game on June 6, 2019. PSG had already won the title that season. In his final match, PSG beat Cesson-Rennes 29-20.
Thierry Omeyer's International Career
Thierry Omeyer first played for the French national team on September 19, 1999, against Romania. He quickly became a key player for France.
Becoming a World Champion
In 2001, he helped France become World champions. They won a very close final against Sweden, 28-25, after two extra times.
Olympic Gold Medals
In 2008, Thierry became an Olympic champion at the Beijing Games. He played amazingly well and was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament. In the final game, he saved 19 out of 39 shots, helping France beat Iceland 28-23. He won another Olympic gold medal in 2012 at the London Games.
More World Championship Wins
In 2015, he became a World champion again when France beat Qatar 25-22. He was named both the best goalkeeper and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of that tournament. He also won the World Championship in 2009, 2011, and 2017, making him a five-time world champion!
