Thomas Adair Butler (1836–1901) was a brave English soldier. He received the Victoria Cross (VC), which is the highest award for courage in the face of the enemy. This special medal is given to British and Commonwealth forces.

Early Life and Military Start
Thomas Butler was born on February 12, 1836, in Soberton, Hampshire, England. He received his education at home.
In 1854, when he was 18, Thomas joined the army. He became an Ensign, which is a junior officer rank. He served with the 1st Bengal European Fusiliers. Later, in 1856, he became a Lieutenant. He also taught soldiers how to use their rifles.
Serving in the Indian Mutiny
Thomas Butler served during the Indian Mutiny, a major conflict that began in 1857. He was involved in many battles around Delhi. He also worked closely with General Nicholson during the action at Nugafshot.
He played a part in the important Storming of Delhi. Later, he was present at the Siege of Lucknow, where he performed an act of great bravery.
A Daring Act of Courage
Thomas Butler was 22 years old and a Lieutenant during the Indian Mutiny. On March 9, 1858, in Lucknow, India, he showed incredible bravery.
During a battle, he swam across the Goomtee River. Then, he climbed a wall and stayed there for a long time. He was under heavy enemy fire. He stayed in this dangerous spot until his fellow soldiers could take over the area. This brave act earned him the Victoria Cross.
Later Military Career
After his heroic actions, Thomas Butler continued his military service. He later took part in the Umbeyla Campaign. He rose through the ranks and eventually became a major. He served with the 101st Regiment of Foot.
